After 6 years to faithful service, the SMART daemon on my backup server was getting serious and it became time to retire it the server. Many new cheap network attached storage (NAS) boxes had become available, using only a fraction of the space and electricity. I ended up buying a D-Link DNS-321 for $90 and a Samsung 1.5 TByte hard disk for $100. Over time, I will add another hard disk, so that daily backups can alternate between the two disks. This will give me twice the snapshots for the same reliability as RAID1, without the hassle of rebuilding. The D-Link DNS-321 (or the near identical DNS-323, or CH3SNAS) is a Network Attached Storage (NAS) solution that can hold up to two drives. It makes the drive available as SMB or NFS shares. It has a little ARM processor, 64 MByte of memory and a GigE interface. «read more»

The introduction of high definition video (AVCHD) brought my Core 2 Duo based desktop to its knees. The main limitations were the virtual address space and sheer processing power. What appeared impossible 2 1/2 years ago, became an every day reality. Below you find my notes of this endaver. «read more»
This document describes a solution to transcode video from Adobe Premiere Pro to Apple TV, DVD or Blu-ray Disk. It assumes that video was rendered to a Lagarith Lossless encoded AVI file (see the last section of Canon Vixia HF10/HF11/HF100 > Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 > Lagarith Lossless). While Premiere Pro’s Media Encoder can be used to export to both AppleTV and DVD format, its quality is marginal. By exporting to Lagarith Lossless, Premiere is used for what it is good at: render video and the transcodng is left to free tools. «read more»
This guide describes an nearly free frame accurate solution to edit video from the Canon Vixia HF10/HF11/HF100 camcorder in Adobe Premiere Pro 3.2 (CS3). It builds on the assumptions listed below. It is rather trivial to adapt to other frame rates, resolutions or even other NLEs. It assumes that the camera is set to PF24 1920×1080 mode, and used with Adobe Premiere 3.2 (CS3). The solution described in this guide involves a substantial number of steps. «read more»
I grew up in Bergen op Zoom. A mid-size town in the South of the Netherlands. In fourth grade, I got a birthday present that marked the years to come. It was a do-it-yourself electronics kit. A combination of resistors, capacitors and transistors each uniquely marked with intriguing labels. I would not give up until I knew what drove these things. Devouring a wide range of “how to” books gave me the confidence to take anything apart. I often gained a few spare components while putting them back together. Nothing in the house was safe from me. I had to see what was inside. Learn what made them work. I wanted to see how complicated things happen; build radios out of old tape recorders. I enjoyed fiddling with these machines. «read more»
Start each working day with the idea that it may be the last. Ignore all orders that are aimed at destroying your dream. Do whatever it takes to realize your project, despite of your job description. Find people that can help you. Follow your intuition when you select people. Don’t go for second best. Keep a low profile – publicity triggers a company’s immune mechanism. Do not bet on a race if you do not run in it yourself. It is easier to ask forgiveness than approval. Be loyal to your targets but stay realistic on how you may reach them. Honor your sponsors, but don’t let them run you over. «read more»
